Dumping Toxic Chemicals in our Ocean, St Helena Bay 2022

Dumping Toxic Chemicals in our Ocean, St Helena Bay 2022

Mr Truter please convene a public meeting, explaining the illegal dumping of toxic material in our bay area. There are too many diffrent views on line about the Illegal Dumping, in a public meeting you can set the record straight.

Around 1 500 tonnes of chemicals on the NS Qingdao bulk carrier were being dumped into the sea about 250km off St Helena Bay in an operation expected to end in March, the SA Maritime Authority (Samsa) said on Thursday. In October 2021, the ship was evacuated from the Port of Durban to St Helena Bay on the West Coast when rainwater set off a toxic fume chemical reaction.

Why is this important?

Our Town St Helena Bay is totally dependant on our fishing industry, if the chemicals destroy our fish, we would be crippled as a community and our local economy destroyed. We dont have the knowledge and the correct-info to deal with the issues please help us.

How it will be delivered

We are having good responses on social media. I am trying to get our Mayor to adress the St Helena Bay community. He is the protector of our area and must fight our fight. Thats why we voted him into office. Please send links to your fellow St Helena Bay residence so we can get the numbers to get action.

In October last year, the ship was evacuated from the Port of Durban to St Helena Bay on the West Coast after rainwater set off a toxic fume chemical reaction.

Samsa's captain Vernon Keller says the ship's cargo of fertiliser suffered a chemical reaction releasing sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere.

Keller, the deputy chief operations officer at Samsa, says the dumping operation is expected to be concluded on 25 March 2022.
